ASSAM, ARUNACHAL PRADESH AND NAGALAND TOUR - TRIBES AND WILDLIFE
This tour is a mix of popular and remote places of Northeast India, and is a great way to start exploring the region’s richness and secrets, through biodiversity rich rain-fed forests, grasslands and mountains, and remote tribal villages where indigenous tribes live a simple and sustainable lifestyle.
Covering the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, by the end of the many safaris and nature treks of the trip, you would have encountered myriad species of wildlife such as tigers, rhinos, elephants, leopards, flying squirrels, deer, elephants and otters to name a few. The variety in bird-life of the region is equally spectacular with many hundreds of species of birds. And then there are chances of seeing a fascinating river dolphin. In total, you will be visiting a total of 5 of the best national parks of the region, namely Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Nameri National Park, Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Namdapha National Park. Out of these, two are World Heritage Sites as declared by UNESCO. The variety in vegetation and landscape of these natural places will leave you immersed in their beauty, from deciduous forests, tropical and sub tropical forests, grasslands, islands and rainforest.
Amongst the tribes, you will meet various Assamese tribes in the spiritual island of Majuli which is located in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River. In the quaint Himalayan valley of Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh, you will get to meet and interact with the Apatani Tribe who are one of the most fascinating and delightful tribes of North East India. They have various intriguing customs, such as the Apatani women who wear huge nasal plugs and have facial tattoos. In the faraway village of Mon in the hills of Nagaland, you will live amongst the Konyak Tribe who are again a very fascinating tribe. They follow a very traditional lifestyle and wear once headhunters and are considered to be one of the fieriest tribe of Northeast India.

After arrival at Guwahati, drive to Manas National Park (3 hours), an UNESCO heritage site and one of the best national park of Assam. Overnight at a jungle resort located midst miles and miles of tea gardens. Afternoon can be spent birdwatching around the resort. Evening free at leisure.
After breakfast, go for walk near the national park to observe birds. Visit an Assamese tribal village and a tea factory where you will learn about tea production. After lunch, go for a long jeep safari to the interiors of Manas National Park, till the border with Bhutan. After sunset, floodlights will be mounted in the jeep and the safari will turn into a night safari. Return to resort late in the evening. Rest of the evening free at leisure. Bonfires will be available.
After breakfast, leave for Nameri National Park (6 hours), one of the most scenic national park of India. Overnight at eco-cottages.
Go for an thrilling early morning nature hike, guided by a wildlife guide. Witness the amazing birdlife of Nameri and chances are very much possible of seeing big animals. Later after breakfast, drive to Kaziranga National Park (4 hours) for overnight stay at a standard hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure.
After breakfast, go for a jeep safari to central range of Kaziranga National Park, home to an astounding eight species of primates. Later in the afternoon, depart for Majuli Island (2-3 hours), a beautiful island which is the hub of Assamese culture.. En route you will get a chance to sail in the mighty Brahmaputra River in a scenic ferry-ride. Overnight will be in tribal cottages with basic amenities.
Early in the morning, visit some of the tribal villages of the many tribes which inhabit the island. After breakfast, go for a tour of the xatras (Asamese monastaries) of the island. Interact with the monks and head priest, and learn more about the beautiful religion of Neo Vaishnavism that the people of Assam follow. Later, you may explore the island and its many secrets at leisure. Maybe go bicycling around the vast landscape of the island, or go birdwatching. Evening free at leisure. You will get to taste ethnic cuisine and the local alcohol called 'apong'.
Leave for Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh (7-9 hours). Overnight at a guesthouse/home-stay with basic amenities.
Spend the two days exploring the beautiful Ziro Valley, where the Apatani Tribe live. Go for short hikes, visit Apatani villages and houses, interact with the tribal people and learn more about their unique and fascinating culture. You may also visit Tarin high-altitude fishery.
Drive to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (8-10 hours), a unique biodiversity region located in an island. Overnight at a resort/cottages near the National Park.
Go for a boat ride in Magori-bil, a lake rich in birdlife, with many rare and endangered water birds present. Later go for a boat ride in the Brahmaputra River to the interior of Dibru-Saikhowa where you may come across river dolphins. Go for a short trek in the national park. Good chances of seeing rare birds and some wildlife. Packed lunch will be served. Return to cottage by late afternoon for overnight stay.
Leave for Deban (6-7 hours) where Namdapha National Park starts. Overnight at government run cottage.
Day 13, 14
After breakfast, leave for moderate trek to Hornbill Campsite (16 kms/3-4 hours). The campsite is located in the middle of a rainforest and is famous for many rare birds. Chances of seeing exotic wildlife such as flying squirrels, gibbons, deer is also possible. Explore the forests around Hornbill, guided by an expert naturalist guide. Visit Bulbulia, a little swamp famous for rare wildlife, and hot water sulfur springs. Overnight stay will be in tents.
Trek back to Deban. Spend the day exploring forests around Deban which are one of the best places for wildlife watching. Also, visit tribal villages of Chakma Tribe and Lama Tribe.
After early breakfast, leave for Mon in Nagaland (7-9 hours), home to the Konyak Tribe. Overnight in budget home-stay/hotel.
Explore Mon and around villages, including Cheanghah Chingyu. Interact with the tribe, visit their homes and learn about their rich history and culture. Go for short hikes. Stay in budget home-stay/hotel.
Drive to Dibrugarh Town (6 hours). Overnight at 3 star hotel. Explore Dibrugarh Town in the evening. See sunset from riverbank, explore the markets, or visit a tea plantation.
Take a return flight from Dibrugarh Airport. Tour ends.
